Occasionally in the desert, I'll stumble across colorful small scenes of natural oils. These occur in stagnant puddles and water, and they are born out of a completely natural process. They occur when a leaf or other organic matter comes into contact with the water and begins to break down. The result from the bacteria breaking down the organic matter is a colorful explosion of these oils. I will often find leaves alongside them, but sometimes, I'll find puddles that only contain the oils. Their colors are bright and vibrant, and they offer so many creative opportunities for abstract photography. Below are two galleries containing images from my adventures photographing these oils.
