Last month, I had the extraordinary opportunity to witness a G4 geomagnetic storm that painted the skies over Glacier National Park with breathtaking aurora displays. It felt like a profound gift to experience such a vibrant show of light again, especially after encountering a similar geomagnetic storm in Yellowstone just a few months prior. The decision to head to Glacier for this aurora adventure came at the end of a whirlwind week of travel, chasing the elusive aurora.

Our journey to this aurora display began with teaching two workshops in Yellowstone National Park, followed by hiking in Rainier National Park. From there, we returned to Yellowstone to pursue another aurora forecast, which, despite our hopes, didn’t yield the results we were looking for. Finally, we made our way to Glacier, where the skies rewarded our persistence.

This storm was far more active and colorful than we experienced in May at Yellowstone. Being further north and closer to the auroral oval significantly impacted intensity and vibrancy. We chased and photographed the aurora for eight unforgettable hours, accompanied by friends Michael Frye, Claudia, and fellow photographer Kristal Leonard. The most compelling thing about experiencing and photographing this aurora was how quickly and how vast the color range was with the aurora throughout the night. I was in awe of how the landscape and sky could transform entirely in just a few minutes. One moment, the scene was awash in green; the vibrant pink, red, or purple hues danced across the sky.

The experience moved me to happy tears. Each time I see the aurora, I am reminded of how precious and fleeting these moments are and how deeply they connect us to the rhythms of the Earth.I’ve captured the full story of that magical night in a narrative accompanied by 37 new photographs taken as we followed the aurora across Glacier National Park.
